A Screw Cutting Tip
Here's a very minor tip, but it may be useful to some folks.
I often use a screw-checker to trim bolts to length. Clamp the checker in a vise and run a nut up the bolt to lock it against the screw-checker plate, leaving the excess sticking out the back. Although my screw checker came with a chisel to shear off screws, I usually use a hacksaw, as it seems less brutal. But the saw will abrade the back of the screw checker unless you have machine-like hands. To avoid that damage, I tried putting electric tape on the back of the screw checker to guide the saw blade and keep it away from the checker. That wore out quickly though, so I replaced it with stainless steel tape that I bought at the hardware store. That holds up much better.
