![]() Pass Along MW December 08 Quick and Easy Center Finding To quickly find the center of a round piece that is set up in a milling machine vise, I just cut a 30-degree point on a hunk of 3/8" diameter stock. This piece is mounted in the quill, using either a chuck or collet. The point is lightly brought down to the middle of a 6” machinist’s ruler, which was been put on top of the workpiece, parallel with the cross-feed direction. If the spindle is on center, the ruler will be parallel to the table. To fine-tune the location, try moving the cross-feed in and out until you find the horizontal position. This will get you very close to the workpiece centerline and will likely prove to be adequate for a number of situations.
